Crossroads 20th Street Streetscape Design-Build

The Taliaferro & Browne (T&B) and Musselman & Hall Design-Build team was selected by the City to design and construct 20th street from Southwest Trafficway to Grand Boulevard located in the Crossroads District of Kansas City, Missouri. The project included a roadway section comprised of two vehicular lanes, parking buffered curbside, bicycle lanes, and center turn lane.

Along the north side of the street, wide pedestrian walkways provide ample space for visitors to gather during the popular crossroads First Friday events. Unique to this project is that the walkways also serve as a concrete “lid” for a series of box culverts that provide underground stormwater detention. Surface runoff is directed into a connected system of vegetated bioswales that run through the walkways. Other elements associated with the vegetated bioswale design include various forebays for sediment capture and energy dissipation, weir walls, inlet control structures, and pedestrian bridges.

What We Did

Taliaferro & Browne provided all civil engineering, landscape architecture, topographic and property surveys, water, and served as the green stormwater infrastructure design lead for the project.
