JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for coordination and supervision of survey activities including research, drafting, plan preparation, field work, field notes, data collection, complex computations, staffing, and managing equipment.


CHARACTERISTICS: 
 

  • Provide direct support to the firm’s Senior Surveyors
  • Independently applies a thorough knowledge of current surveying principles and practices
  • Detailed knowledge of field operations and methods of performing a variety of surveys
  • Thorough knowledge of the care, cleaning and use of a variety of surveying tools and equipment
  • Extensive knowledge of mathematics related to traverse, inverse and intersection computations
  • Well versed in field note reduction, plan interpretation and preparation/CAD skills
  • Independent judgment and communication with strong technical and supervisory skills
  • Familiarity with day-to-day field and/or office operations of a survey department
  • Knowledge of surveying ethics and technical standards (ALTA, NGS, NSPS, ACSM, BLM, and ACSE)
  • Familiarity with local and state land-use regulations


RESPONSIBILITIES: 
 

  • Perform leveling, traversing, public land surveys, metes and bounds surveys, ALTA surveys, topographic surveys, construction surveys, horizontal and vertical control surveys, State Plane Coordinate surveys and as-built surveys
  • Familiar with requirements of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and geographic information systems (GIS)
  • Perform mathematical checks of trigonometry, geometry, algebra, coordinate geometry, and basic surveying computations, including lot, area, and intersection (bearing-bearing, distance-distance, bearing-distance)
  • Perform traverse and level loop computations including closure, precision determination and adjustment computations
  • Use, obtain, and interpret control point records and data sheets, as well as locate control points in the field
  • Supervised research of land records, survey records, and land titles to resolve discrepancies
  • Determine proper equipping of personnel, inventory, evaluate, specify, and purchase field equipment
  • Coordinate and supervise field & office work for a variety of standard types of surveys
  • Plan reading and preparation, drafting and computer-aided drafting (CAD)
  • Coordinate and format survey elements into drawings for design professionals
  • Develop traffic control and safety procedures for a variety of surveying and construction operations
  • Interact with clients, customers, designers, managers, contractors, and others
  • Manage field crew, scheduling, equipment, supplies, office workflow procedures, field and office problem solving, personnel performance, basic budgeting, and cost control
  • Train personnel in all aspects of field and/or office surveying practices
  • Review requirements to obtain Professional Land Surveyor License

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (minimum)
  • Preferred BS degree in survey-related field from an ABET accredited program
  • Preferred Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT), CPR, and First Aid Certifications
  • Preferred member of professional or technical society
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • AutoCAD or MicroStation
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills
  • 6+ years of surveying experience, with 2 years in supervisory capacity (minimum)
