What is your role at T&B?
I am a civil engineer responsible for helping senior level engineers with design work including site layout and conformance to local design guidelines, grading and erosion controls, roads and parking, utilities, storm water management, and other aspects of project involvement.
How many years of experience do you have?
I graduated from the University of Missouri - Kansas City with my Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in May 2014. I am relatively new to the industry but have gained a lot of experience at Taliaferro & Browne.
What made you choose civil engineering as a career choice?
In high school, I was good in math and had an interest in understanding how roads, bridges and building structures are created. In college, I chose civil engineering because I was passionate about building things and wanted to make a positive impact on people's lives.
Within civil engineering, what do you do?
Originally, my goal was to become a structural engineer. Over time, I have developed a passion for civil engineering aspects of site design and development.
How has T&B impacted you as a professional?
Working side by side with senior level engineers has been extremely helpful. I’m rapidly gaining knowledge and hands-on experience that would typically take a fresh college graduate working at a larger engineering firm years to gain. Our senior level engineers actually take the time to make sure my skill level, knowledge and experience are constantly growing. For example, when I first started my career I knew only the fundamentals of AutoCAD. Now, I am 90 percent proficient with AutoCAD, especially AutoCAD Civil 3D. I also fully understand how to make my designs compliant with city codes. It’s challenging but exciting.
How do you feel working at T&B?
I like the relaxed atmosphere and working side by side with senior level engineers. When I have a question about a project, they are never too busy to help.
How does T&B help you achieve your personal and professional goals?
Eventually, I want to have the opportunity to lead a project. The current project managers I work with constantly push me to do something different, gaining a wealth of knowledge and experience in a variety of different market sectors. This experience helps to shape my future.
What projects do you enjoy the most and why?
Honestly, it’s a great feeling to design a project and watch it become a reality. I’ve been working on a variety of residential development projects. Right now, I am the civil engineer for the Columbus Park Lofts that are currently under construction. It’s one of my first projects and I’m excited to see the end result.
What is the culture like at T&B and why do you feel comfortable working here?
It’s a relaxed and friendly environment. However, everyone here is hard-working and deadline driven which is extremely motivating. I also don’t feel like I’m a junior engineer. I don’t have to go through multiple individuals to speak with an engineer. I like the fact that I speak directly with senior level project managers and our owners if I have any questions, comments or concerns.
What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career at T&B?
T&B provides a really great learning environment for both new engineers and experienced engineers. We treat each other like family. We’re also small enough to easily communicate with each other yet large enough to design bigger construction projects.
What are some of the challenges that engineers face?
Managing different parties involved with a project and being sure to stay compliant with city codes can be challenging. We also drive to get things done within project schedule. Sometimes, this can be really challenging due to problems that occur during the project. It causes us to have to come up with solutions fast while remaining compliant.
